Oh, how we hate change!  Like it or not, it’s going to happen to all of us…particularly physical changes!  Don’t you just love it when your clothes don’t fit right anymore?  We’d like to think that our clothes have done the changing, not us.  But then we might experience another change.  Maybe the bed doesn’t seem as comfortable as it used to be.  Did the bed change too?  Other changes such as eye strain, headaches, stiff necks, walking gait (the way we walk), a lack flexibility or range of motion might occur.  OK, let’s face it, WE are the ones changing!  When and why did life that was once routine, stop being simple?

Although we might not experience all of these negative changes, at least not all at once, we have to face reality: our bodies are composed of living cellular matter that changes as we age.  And it doesn’t have to be as dismal as my example.  The choices we make every day can make all the difference!  For example, how many of us make the mistake of slouching while working on the computer?  I catch myself with poor posture even as I write this article!  I realize that if I don’t correct it, my body will adapt (postural forming) in a way so subtle that I won’t really notice it until, one day, my body finally begins to respond with…PAIN!  All this because of a repetitive motion of poor postural function accelerated by the pull of gravity.

Survey yourself to see what you can do to correct problems, or, better yet, to slow the progression of change:

            ·Are you nutritionally sound?

·Do you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water?

·Do you maintain good posture at home and in the workplace?

            ·Do you get adequate sleep?

·Do you wear comfortable, well-fitting clothes and shoes?

            ·Do you exercise regularly?

·Have you successfully dealt with emotional scars?

·Do you avoid too much stress and anxiety?

            ·Do you avoid “toxic” environments?

·Do you control your alcohol intake?

            ·Are you a non-smoker?

·Do you refrain from drugs and avoid over-medicating yourself?

Hopefully, you have answered “yes” to all or most of these questions.  If not, you have a starting-point to create POSITIVE changes in your body.  Our “weaknesses” can be reflected in so many facets of lives: our daily tasks, performance in sports, the quality of our relationships, and, most importantly, our overall quality of life.  This is the foundation of body awareness.

How are you changing your body and life for the future?  Act now…or react later.
