Free Extra Energy Greg Spindler, LMT, CSET As athletes, we are always looking for that extra edge over our competition or to set a personal record. Some even say, “the perfect day,” or “on auto pilot.” How we get there is sometimes a mystery that is never explained, it just happens. It’s a narrow window of opportunity when everything clicks. And for those of you who have experienced it, it is unforgettable. It is a combination of emotions, chemical balances, and energy moving through the body to create the ideal state. Training defined is practice! Practice! And more practice! YOUR BODY KNOWS BY WHAT HAS BEEN PRACTICED.
Emotions are dramatically connected to the excitement of being active. Perhaps the joy stems from just the mere factor of participation, by a few cheers from spectators. The Positive vs. Negative thing happens. Positive wins by inspired energy, an incredible fuel source. But controlling the emotions must be practiced.
Finding the body’s right chemical balances for processing our fuel, oxygen, and dealing with the lactic acid of stress is science at work. This is all black and white and, for the most part, can be done with formulas. The body’s familiarity with this process becomes easier with time.
But RECEIVING, RUNNING, and/or CREATING energy raises our ability or potential just a bit to create that state of harmony. So, where does that come from? How does it work with what we’re doing? Is it felt? Seen? Measured? Or even believed? A focused build-up of energy can be found and used for brief periods to make performance gains.
As we monitor heart rates, paces, nutrition, and control our emotions, we must go after this missing ingredient (mentally), stir it up, and bring it in to use. Doing this takes practice just like anything else. Lots of practice. And usually, during workout and/or race situations, we get interrupted during the process and achieving it gets lost or forgotten (temporarily). Then, we have to start over. It’s circulating or locked in a position within the body, working against you. Find it, unlock it, and use it. Simple as that.
So begin with breathing. Exhaling is the key to releasing bad (carbon) and allowing more good (oxygen) to enter the body. Exhale slowly and with control. Inhale at your normal rate of consumption. For example, try inhaling 1.5 seconds and exhaling 3.0 seconds. Scan your body, looking for locked tension, and unleash it. Then think of the task at hand in very specific, detailed segments. Transfer this energy to your technique of the sport in progress. You’ll be surprised at the small gain that can be achieved that may be your limiter to success. Time spent in this zone will vary. Distractions usually pull us out of it. When this occurs, start over ASAP.
For those of you who can master this, an electrifying sense of particles can sometimes be felt. It’s a life force, some say. Sound weird? Oh, yes. Only because it is not understood. But do it. It’s free, and it’s inside all of us. It’s free energy. Go get it!
