The Origins of the Distorted Golf Swing Greg Spindler, CSET, LMT Divot, Slice, Hook, Bogey, Double Bogey, Mulligan, even FORE! Are these common words that you have become used to using each week playing golf? And then you say you enjoy it? Back to the driving range you go to practice. And what are you practicing? I can bet you are practicing the same thing over and over…the distorted golf swing! You hit a couple good shots and then a couple bad shots. And you say, “Come on, focus!” or “Maybe I should address the ball this way”. But truly, what is happening is that you are breaking down or collapsing into a weakness pattern called the “core distortion”.
Discovered by Dr. Dallas Hancock and perfected into rehabilitation use by Don McCann developing Structural Energetic Therapy (SET), the core distortion can be improved or eliminated. In just a few sessions, the lever system within the muscular-skeletal-myofascial system improves. This results in better alignment and posture and, with that, increased efficiency. Let’s look at this in further detail.
It is said that the golf club is an extension of the human body. Therefore, if any plane of the body is initiated into a compensated or distorted state during the swing, then the club is distorted as well. You already know the results. Ever notice how your shoes wear unevenly? Have you looked in the mirror and noticed that your right shoulder is lower and rotated inward more than the left? Have you ever seen a picture of yourself from behind and noticed that your belt line is at an angle? These are all common characteristics of the “core distortion”.
Beginning from the central part of the body, there is a certain relationship that exists with the left and right illiums (hip bones). The left is rotated forward and the right rotates backwards to compensate. This rotation and separation of the illiums can create a longer leg, medial rotation of the knee, or a dropped arch, to name just a few on the left side. The rotation of the right shoulder reflects the compensation in the body. This is why you experience the club length change and/or twist throughout the swing. With more weight supporting the body on the left leg, some experience fatigue or collapse during impact on the ball…not good when you are striving for excellence among your friends! All of this occurs because the core distortion does not allow all postural muscles to function at 100% during the entire swing. Instead, the body is at a constant state of compensation throughout the swing.
This is easily seen when you compare tee-offs (longer clubs) to the short game chip shots and putts. You have witnessed it, laughed at it, and quite possibly experienced it yourself. Fortunately, it can be resolved with the advanced techniques of the SET protocol. These techniques reverse the collapsed state which allows the illiums to become closer and more balanced. This results in a chain reaction throughout the muscular-skeletal-myofascial system that brings about balance not only in the hips, but also in the knees, feet, shoulders, elbows, and hands. Our complete lever system is addressed.
After only a few weeks “educating” the body to new postural patterns, golf swings can improve dramatically. Those who suffer from this chronic state can begin to enjoy the game with new efficiency in their golf swing. There is an answer to improving your game! Wouldn’t it be nice to say “Par” on a regular basis?
